Description

Fourth in the Wexler catalog of doubled die reverses for the 2017-P Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter, WDDR-004 (reference: 2017-P 25c MO WDDR-004) documents a hub misalignment event on one of the most scenic reverse designs in the America the Beautiful Quarters program. Ronald D. Sanders designed and Joseph Menna sculpted the Ozark Riverways reverse, which depicts a canoeist navigating a stretch of Missouri's spring-fed waterways — a composition rich in organic textures including water ripples, tree canopy, rocky bluffs, and the human figure itself. Each of these design elements responds to hub doubling differently: water surface patterns produce shifted contour lines, foliage creates displaced leaf clusters, and the canoeist's outline generates conventional doubled edges. The Philadelphia Mint struck these quarters on copper-nickel clad planchets at the standard weight of 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter, feeding them into general circulation during 2017 as part of the ATB program's eighth year. With no additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation known, WDDR-004 sits in the early portion of what would eventually become a substantial DDR family extending past WDDR-021, indicating this was among the first doubled die reverses identified for the Ozark design.
