2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017
ErrorDescription
Positioned seventeenth in the Wexler census of 2017-P Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter doubled die reverses (reference: 2017-P 25c MO WDDR-017), this variety falls into the upper range of the DDR family for this Missouri design, suggesting it was either a later discovery or a variety with more localized, subtle doubling compared to the earlier-numbered entries that typically represent the most visually prominent examples. The Ozark Riverways reverse by Ronald D. Sanders and Joseph Menna captures a paddler navigating one of the park's pristine spring-fed rivers, with geological formations and native vegetation providing a richly textured backdrop. Hub doubling at the seventeenth catalog position often requires more careful examination to identify — the displacement may affect a smaller zone of the design or manifest with a narrower spread than the flagship varieties at the top of the catalog. The ATB quarter program, running from 2010 through 2021 with five designs per year, produced an enormous aggregate volume of quarters across all three active mint facilities, and the 2017 Ozark issue benefited from systematic variety hunting by specialists who examined fresh rolls soon after release. Copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, 24.3 mm diameter. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are documented for WDDR-017.
