2016 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016 1¢ WDDO-018, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits doubled die obverse characteristics visible as extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, with the top right branch of the Y noticeably thicker than the top left branch. Additional notching appears on the lower left serifs of E, R, T, and Y in LIBERTY, providing multiple diagnostic points for attribution. On the obverse, a small die gouge sits well south of the B in LIBERTY and another die gouge appears to the right of the D in GOD. The reverse carries its own set of die markers: a die crack runs along the top left of the shield, accompanied by die chips north of URI in PLURIBUS. These die markers help identify the specific die pair and distinguish WDDO-018 from the many other doubled die obverse varieties documented for modern Lincoln Cents. The Shield reverse design, introduced in 2010, replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse and features a union shield symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single nation. The copper-plated zinc composition has been standard for Lincoln Cents since 1982.
