2016 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team, WDDO-016 on the 2016 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent shows moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY — a doubling effect where the secondary image overlaps the primary closely enough to widen letter strokes rather than creating visibly separated outlines. Moderate classification places this variety between light and strong spread, meaning the thickened letters are detectable under standard magnification. Obverse die markers include a die gouge near the rim to the left of the bottom of Lincoln's bust. On the reverse, a die chip sits on the top left of the shield north of the fist U in PLURIBUS, and a short die crack runs southwest from the bottom left of the N in CENT. These reverse markers help confirm the specific die pair, as WDDO designations describe only the obverse die while reverse markers narrow identification to a particular die marriage.
