Description

The 2016-P Lincoln Shield Cent WDDO-009 is a Wexler-attributed doubled die obverse on the Shield design that debuted in 2010, struck in zinc core with copper plating. This variety shows strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY — a spread visible at low magnification and one of the more accessible doubled die finds on the modern Lincoln series. Obverse die markers include small die chips on the center left of the T and lower left of the Y in LIBERTY, anchoring the obverse identification. The reverse die markers are extensive: a small die gouge between the tops of M and E in AMERICA; a strong die gouge running west-southwest from the rim above the D in UNITED with a shorter parallel gouge slightly to the right; a die crack along the top left of the shield; and a large die chip north of the UR in PLURIBUS. The combination of LIBERTY extra thickness with the multiple reverse die markers — particularly the WSW gouge above D in UNITED and the die chip north of PLURIBUS — makes this variety straightforward to confirm. The reverse die chip north of PLURIBUS is often the first feature spotted under a loupe and serves as a reliable entry point for attribution.
