Description

Showing strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY and light extra thickness on the date, the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield cent WDDO-007 ranks among the more visually prominent doubled die obverses in the modern cent series. The strong designation on LIBERTY indicates that the hub displacement produced clearly defined secondary images on the lettering, while the lighter spread on the date numerals reflects the geometry of the misalignment diminishing across the die face. Specific die markers anchor the attribution. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears below the right side of the numeral two in the date, and another small die gouge sits to the left of the top of the second T in TRUST. On the reverse, a die chip can be found on the top left of the shield north of the L in PLURIBUS. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 2016 1¢ WDDO-007, this variety combines strong primary doubling on LIBERTY with supporting die markers on both sides, making it a rewarding find for collectors searching through rolls and bags of 2016 cents. The graduated strength from LIBERTY to the date is characteristic of rotational or offset hub doubling.
