Description

Manifesting as moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY — with distinct notches visible on the lower left of R, T, and Y — this 2016 Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die obverse offers one of the more accessible attribution targets among recent cent varieties. The Wexler Team cataloged it as Wexler Variety ID 2016 1¢ WDDO-002 with no known cross-references. The notching on RTY provides a strong diagnostic, as the lower left portions of these letters show clear stepping between primary and secondary hub impressions. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge between the upper 1 and 6 in the date, while the reverse carries small die chips on the top left of the shield north of U and R in PLURIBUS — details confirming die identity when the doubling may be ambiguous in certain die states. The Shield reverse, introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Memorial, features a union shield symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the nation. Philadelphia produces billions of Lincoln Shield Cents annually, and WDDO-002's moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY places it within reach of collectors examining rolls and bags from 2016 production.
