Description

Very strong spread directed north creates an extra left central doorway roof within the triangle pediment on this 2016 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, depicting Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, features architectural details including the triangular pediment above the central portico where this doubling manifests. The northward hub displacement was strong enough to produce a clearly visible extra roof line in the doorway area beneath the pediment triangle, making this one of the more dramatic doubled die reverses for modern Jefferson Nickels. Stage A documents both the reverse and obverse in Early Die State, while Stage B in Mid-Die State and Stage C in Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The Early Die State confirmation suggests the earliest known specimens were struck while the die was still fresh, preserving the doubling at its sharpest before die wear could soften the separation.
