2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Beneath the upper door frame of the Monticello center door and above the steps, Class VIII tilted hub doubling appears on this 2016-P Jefferson nickel, attributed by Stephen Young with the Wexler designation 2016-P WDDR-005. The obverse carries two authentication markers: a die dot positioned below Jefferson's right nostril and a die chip lodged between E and R of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die dot above the upper left side of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM provides additional fingerprinting. The Class VIII doubling on the center door frame is characteristic of the Monticello reverse's susceptibility to this particular hubbing anomaly: the door frame, with its rectangular geometry and position below the pediment, sits in a zone where tilted hub displacement can produce clean, architecturally suggestive doubled lines that resemble a slightly misaligned blueprint overlay. The 2016-P nickel continues the Return to Monticello design era, and Philadelphia's nickel production that year exceeded one billion pieces, generating enough die usage to produce numerous documented DDR varieties. WDDR-005 holds a position early in the 2016-P DDR sequence, suggesting it was among the first varieties discovered and submitted from that year's production.
