Description

Designated DDR-001 by VarietyVista, this is the primary doubled die reverse variety for the 2016 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, carrying universal variety code UVC-1875 and die marriage record DMR-002. Strong extra thickness is evident across all reverse lettering and building details of the Monticello design. Four die stages chronicle the die's production life. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. By Stage B at early-to-mid die state, a die depression has developed in the field west of the building, while the obverse has also reached early-to-mid die state. Stage C at mid-die state reveals a die break in the left archway and a die chip above the left small window, with the obverse likewise at mid-die state. Stage D in late die state remains unconfirmed. As the number-one DDR listing for the 2016 nickel, this variety represents the strongest known doubling on the date and is the most sought-after reverse variety from that year's Philadelphia production. The broad extra thickness across all design elements makes attribution straightforward even at lower magnification levels.
