Description

One shy of the half-century mark in the Harpers Ferry DDR catalog, WDDR-049 documents a hub doubling event on a Philadelphia Mint reverse die from the 2016 ATB Quarter production. At this point in the numbering, the Wexler Team had already identified and differentiated 48 prior DDR dies for the same design, each with its own unique doubling characteristics. Thomas Hipschen's depiction of John Brown's Fort, set within the natural landscape at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, contains sufficient detail to permit this level of granular differentiation. The architectural stonework, window openings, roofline, and foreground railing each respond differently to hub offset depending on their position and orientation relative to the die center. No specific die markers are documented for WDDR-049. Cross-referenced as 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-049 by the Wexler Team, with no competing attributions established. Circulation strikes and mint-set coins from 2016 both serve as potential sources for Harpers Ferry DDR specimens.
