Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDR-040 with no additional cross-references currently known, this America the Beautiful Quarter features doubling in the windows in the arch above the center doorway and at the top of the third window from the left in the bottom row of windows — localized displacement within the architectural details of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park reverse design. The design depicts the historic John Brown's Fort, and the window areas provide fine geometric reference elements where even slight hub displacement produces detectable doubling against the rectangular window frames. Two obverse die stages are documented: Stage A shows no significant markers, while Stage B develops a large die chip on the base of the bust to the left of the designer's initials JF — a substantial deterioration marker that aids die state identification. Reverse Stage A shows small die gouges (dots) in the fourth and sixth windows from the left in the second row of windows from the bottom; Reverse Stage B maintains the same markers. Submitted to the Wexler catalog for documentation, this variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2016 as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program (2010-2021). The coin is composed of copper-nickel clad (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The Harpers Ferry reverse, depicting the site of John Brown's 1859 raid that hastened the Civil War, features detailed architectural rendering of the fort building that creates numerous potential doubling manifestation points in the windows, doors, and stonework detail. The 40th cataloged DDR for the 2016 Harpers Ferry quarter documents the variety richness that the program's detailed pictorial reverses generate across the working die population.
