Description

Representing the modern era of hub doubling on Jefferson Nickels, this 2016 regular-strike doubled die reverse displays Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling. Class VIII doubling shows on the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, where the hub contacted the die at a slightly tilted angle during re-hubbing. Class VIII is among the subtler doubling classes, produced when the hub enters the die at an angle causing design elements on one side to shift while those near the tilt axis remain unaffected — concentrating visible spread on the architectural detail of the doorway. Die markers include a die dot above Jefferson's left eye on the obverse, a die dot to the right of the T of UNITED on the reverse, and a die gouge to the lower right of the first S of STATES. The 2016 Jefferson Nickel bears the Felix Schlag obverse design and the Monticello reverse that returned in 2006 after the Westward Journey series. No expert name or cross-references are listed. Modern doubled dies are typically subtler than mid-century counterparts due to advances in die production.
