Description

The 2016 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-015 from the Philadelphia Mint displays Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub is tilted during the die-making impression, creating displacement that varies in both direction and intensity across the die face — areas near the tilt axis show minimal doubling while areas farther from the axis show progressively more. On the Monticello reverse, the architectural elements of the building's doorway provide fine parallel lines that make tilted hub displacement particularly visible, as even slight shifts produce noticeable misalignment of the door frame's straight edges. Diagnostic die markers help confirm attribution: die gouge mounds are positioned below the FI of FIVE and to the left of the F of FIVE CENTS, creating a cluster of raised irregular marks in the lower reverse legend area. The 2016 date produced a significant number of doubled die reverse varieties on the Jefferson Nickel, and the WDDR-015 designation places this in the middle of the known sequence, reflecting the productive die variety output from Philadelphia Mint nickel production during this year.
