2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the reverse of a 2016 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, this eleventh Wexler doubled die reverse shows displacement on the upper left side of the door frame on Monticello's center entrance above the steps. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub and working die are not parallel during the hubbing process, causing one side of the design to shift relative to the other — producing doubling that is strongest at the periphery of the tilt axis and diminishes toward the pivot point. Die markers confirm attribution: a die gouge above the upper left side of the first T in TRUST on the obverse, a die chip between the right side of the Monticello building and the designer's initial F on the reverse, and a die crack in the field to the left of the building. Felix Schlag's Monticello design, which has graced the Jefferson Nickel reverse since 1938, provides architectural detail fine enough that even subtle hub displacement becomes detectable on the columned portico and doorway elements. The combination of a Class VIII mechanism with multiple die markers gives this variety clear diagnostics for reliable identification.
