2016-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

First doubled die obverse cataloged for the 2016 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, WDDO-001 displays minor doubling on the left side of the lower earlobe — a subtle variety requiring careful examination to confirm. On the obverse, a small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the bridge of the nose, serving as the primary die marker for attribution. The reverse carries a die crack running along the top of the left side of the shield north of the LURI in PLURIBUS, providing a secondary identification feature on the Union Shield design. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2016-D 1' WDDO-001, the first-in-sequence designation establishes the baseline entry for 2016-D doubled die obverses. While the minor earlobe doubling places this among the subtler DDO varieties, its status as WDDO-001 means it is the primary reference point against which subsequent 2016-D discoveries will be compared.
