2015 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-030

Description

Attributed as Wexler 2015 1c WDDO-030, this doubled die obverse on a 2015 Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, with the top right branch of the Y being noticeably thicker than the top left branch — a reliable diagnostic that distinguishes this variety from other 2015 DDOs. Obverse die markers include a die crack running north-northwest from the eyebrow well into the forehead region. The asymmetric thickening on the Y of LIBERTY is characteristic of hub doubling that displaced the letter outlines in one direction, adding material to one side while leaving the other at normal thickness. The thirtieth documented doubled die obverse for the 2015 date reflects substantial variety research on the Lincoln Shield Cent series, which debuted in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse design. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, the 2015 Shield Cent continues the Lincoln obverse that has been in production since 1909. Attributed by the Wexler team. A short die scratch can be found on the front of the vest WSW of the 2 in the date. Reverse: A die break can be found on the top left of the shield north of the PLUR in PLURIBUS. A die gouge can be found just to the left of the top of the N in ONE.
