Description

Cataloged as Wexler 2015 1c WDDO-028, this Lincoln Shield Cent regular strike features strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with prominent notches on the lower left of ERTY — indicating the secondary hub impression was offset to the lower left. The obverse die marker is a small die gouge touching the top of the zero in the date, while two reverse markers confirm the die pair: a die chip on the top left of the shield north of the first U in PLURIBUS and a die chip on the band below the R in PLURIBUS. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010 with a Union Shield reverse designed by Lyndall Bass, replaced the Memorial reverse and brought new design elements for variety specialists to examine. Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY is among the most desirable doubling presentations on Shield Cent obverses because the letters are positioned prominently and the doubling is readily visible under moderate magnification. As the twenty-eighth WDDO for the 2015 date, this variety contributes to a growing census of Shield Cent doubled dies demonstrating the series produces collectible varieties at a rate comparable to its Memorial predecessor.
