Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2015 1¢ WDDO-019 with no other known cross-references, this Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent displays extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY with notches visible on the lower left of ERTY. The obverse carries two small die gouges south of the 2 in the date, a die crack running north-south through the hair on the back of the head with a die chip west of the top of the ear, and another crack running northwest from the front of the eyebrow through the forehead. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits below the U in UNITED, another between the M and E in AMERICA, and a die crack runs along the top left of the shield with a die chip north of the P in PLURIBUS. The LIBERTY notching on the lower left serifs of E, R, T, and Y provides the most accessible initial diagnostic, visible even at moderate magnification. The obverse crack network through the hair and forehead combined with the reverse shield crack and PLURIBUS chip creates a comprehensive die marker profile that distinguishes this from other 2015 DDO listings.
