Description

Submitted by Steve Young and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2015 1¢ WDDO-015, this Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent carries a doubled die obverse showing extra thickness on LIBERTY, strongest on the ERTY portion. The obverse die displays progressive deterioration: a die crack runs southwest to northeast through the hair on the upper head, extending into the field right of the bottom of E in WE. A small die gouge dot sits south of the 20 in the date, with a die scratch running northeast from the top of the chin. The reverse shows a die crack along the top left of the shield with die chips above LUR in PLURIBUS, and a short die crack north of UR in PLURIBUS. No cross-references to other attribution systems are known. The concentration of doubling on the ERTY portion, with diminishing strength moving leftward, suggests the hub was slightly displaced along that axis during the secondary impression. Shield cents from 2015 were produced in enormous quantities at Philadelphia, making this variety a testament to careful cherrypicking from modern Lincoln cent production.
