2015 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Doubling is visible on LIBERTY on this 2015 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, discovered by Charles D. Hudson. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2015 1c WDDO-008, with no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the ER of LIBERTY, a die scratch running east from the bottom of the 5 in the date, and a die chip under the bust. Additional obverse markers include a die gouge (appearing as a dot) below the right side of the T in TRUST, die scratches running north-south above the N in IN, and a small die gouge between the right side of the T and the R of TRUST. The reverse displays a die gouge below the left side of the U in UNITED and a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the N in ONE. The abundance of die markers across both sides — gouges, scratches, and chips — provides multiple attribution points beyond the doubling on LIBERTY itself. The Lincoln Shield Cent was in its sixth year of production in 2015, and the Union Shield reverse design by Lyndall Bass had become the established standard following the 2009 Bicentennial and the Shield's 2010 debut. Strong extra thickness shows on the date and a lesser spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY.Die Markers: Obverse: A die chip can be found on the bottom left of the 2 in the date.
