Description

Carrying the Wexler designation 2015-P 25¢ NE WDDO-001, this is the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2015 Homestead National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The WDDO-001 designation indicates this was the premier doubled die obverse discovered for this specific design, typically suggesting the most prominent or readily identifiable doubling among any varieties that may be cataloged for the issue. The America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 program featured five unique reverse designs annually, each honoring a national park or site, with the Homestead quarter commemorating the Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska. The coin was struck in copper-nickel clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel), weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter and a reeded edge. The obverse features John Flanagan's Washington portrait, which has been the consistent obverse design element across the State Quarter, D.C. and U.S. Territories, and America the Beautiful programs. Hub misalignment during die preparation created the visible doubling on obverse design elements that defines this variety. With no other cross-references known beyond the Wexler listing, this variety may be uniquely cataloged in the Wexler system. The ATB quarter program's limited production window for each design — typically a single year — means that variety hunters had a concentrated period to search for doubled dies on each issue before the design was retired and replaced by the next national park or site honoree.
