Description

Seventh obverse trail die for the 2014 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent, documented by Trail Dies as 2014P-1DEO-007T, extending the catalog of striking-related varieties on mid-2010s cents from Philadelphia. With at least seven obverse trail dies cataloged for 2014-P, the pattern mirrors the prolific 2012 cluster and reinforces that high-speed production consistently generated mechanical displacement varieties. Each numbered entry represents a physically distinct die — DEO-007T is not the same die as DEO-005T — meaning at least seven obverse dies exhibited trail-producing movement during 2014. The difference between trail dies and doubled dies is one of origin: doubled dies are created during die manufacture when the hub imparts a misaligned impression, while trail dies arise at the press when the die moves fractionally during the strike. Copper-plated zinc at 19mm with Brenner's Lincoln obverse paired with Bass's Union Shield reverse. Examine Lincoln's portrait, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY for a faint secondary contour offset from the primary image, characteristic of mechanical die movement.
