2014P-1DEO-006T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Vivien Bullard and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 2014P-1DEO-006T is a trail die obverse variety on the Philadelphia-minted Lincoln Shield Cent. Trail die varieties result from a die making partial, incomplete, or displaced contact during the striking process, leaving a secondary ghost image on the finished coin. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010, is struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, featuring Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait on the obverse and Lyndall Bass's Union Shield on the reverse. Die markers place this variety at Stage B with the obverse at Mid Die State, where a die chip is visible in Lincoln's forehead area. The reverse, also at MDS, displays a die crack entering into the field from the shield's apex — the topmost point of the shield design. The combination of the forehead die chip on the obverse and the apex die crack on the reverse provides a reliable die-pair identification method. As the sixth trail die obverse documented for the 2014-P Lincoln Shield Cent, this variety is part of a growing catalog of trail die errors being systematically documented for modern cent production.
