Description

Fifth obverse trail die cataloged on the 2014 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent, attributed by Trail Dies as 2014P-1DEO-005T. Two years after the prolific 2012 cluster, the 2014 Philadelphia production again yielded multiple trail die examples — evidence that the conditions producing these varieties were not a one-year anomaly but a recurring phenomenon at the facility. This variety captures a faint secondary impression of Lincoln's portrait and surrounding obverse inscriptions offset in the direction of die movement during striking. The "DEO" designation — Die Error Obverse — distinguishes this from reverse trail dies and indicates the obverse die shifted. Obverse trail dies on the Lincoln Cent are particularly diagnostic because Brenner's high-relief portrait provides fine detail — hair, ear, and collar elements — that reveals even slight displacement as a ghosted secondary contour. Struck on copper-plated zinc at 19mm, the 2014 issue was the fifth year of the Union Shield reverse design. Inspect Lincoln's portrait and LIBERTY for a faint doubled contour displaced from the primary design.
