Description

Light extra thickness on LIBERTY with notches at the bottom left of ERTY characterize WDDO-011 on the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. The notch-style doubling at the base of the ERTY letters creates small step-like projections that provide a precise diagnostic, as these angular features are distinct from the natural letter forms. Obverse die markers include a die gouge southwest of the I of IN, a die chip on a die crack in the upper hair between GOD and WE, and a die chip in the hair above the front of the forehead. The crack-with-chip in the hair area, connecting the GOD-WE zone, indicates moderate die fatigue. Reverse markers comprise a die crack across the top left of the shield and a small die chip north of the first U in PLURIBUS. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2014 1¢ WDDO-011, the combination of notched ERTY letters and the hair area crack-chip complex provides a two-zone obverse identification strategy.
