2014 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

The 2014 WDDO-009 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint features moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, creating a bolder appearance to the inscription than normally seen on this issue. The Wexler designation is 2014 1¢ WDDO-009. Obverse die markers include a light die scratch running from the top of Lincoln's chin to his upper lip and a small die chip on the bottom of the T in LIBERTY. The reverse offers additional diagnostics: a die crack runs across the top left of the shield, die chips appear north of the letters PLU in PLURIBUS, and a die gouge runs through the bottom of the stripe north of the E in CENT. The Shield cent design, introduced in 2010, replaced the Memorial reverse with a Union shield motif symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the nation during the Civil War. The combination of obverse doubling with extensive reverse die deterioration markers makes this variety relatively straightforward to authenticate, as the die crack across the shield and the chips near PLURIBUS are particularly distinctive pickup points.
