Description

Light extra thickness on LIBERTY with notches visible on the bottom left of ERTY characterizes this 2014 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2014 1 cent WDDO-006. The obverse die developed significant cracking: one crack runs NNW from the front of the eyebrow through the front of the forehead, while another runs west to east through the upper hair, with a large die chip on this crack below the W in WE. The reverse also shows progressive deterioration, with a small die gouge just above the top right corner of the shield, a die crack running across the top left of the shield, a die crack running north to south through the right side of the horizontal crossbar of the T in CENT, and a large die chip on this crack to the right of the T. The combination of subtle hub doubling with extensive die cracking on both sides creates a dual-interest variety for collectors. Shield cent varieties from Philadelphia are plentiful given the facility's high production volume, but the notch-style doubling on ERTY offers a distinctive diagnostic that separates this listing from other minor WDDO entries.
