2014 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

WDDO-004 on the 2014-P Lincoln Shield Cent (Wexler Variety ID: 2014 1¢ WDDO-004) shows extra thickness along LIBERTY with notching on the lower left of E, R, T, and Y — characteristic of a hub-shift doubling where the secondary impression offsets toward the lower-left. Die markers are recorded on both obverse and reverse. The 2014-P Lincoln Shield Cent is a copper-plated zinc Philadelphia Mint issue with the permanent Shield reverse introduced in 2010. The lower-left notching on the ERTY letters is the primary diagnostic feature, detectable under 5x magnification. Collectors should confirm the notch positions on E and Y against Wexler reference images to distinguish WDDO-004 from other LIBERTY-doubling varieties for this date. Die Markers: Obverse: A die crack runs NNW from the front of the eyebrow through the front of the forehead. A die scratch runs west from the lower G in GOD. A die crack runs WSW/ENE through the upper hair and then turns north extending to the rim midway between WE and TRUST. A large die chip can be found on this die crack SSW of the W in WE. Reverse: A die crack runs across the top left of the shield. A small die chip can be found north of the L in PLURIBUS.
