Description

Primary doubled die obverse for the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, WDDO-001 shows extra thickness on LIBERTY with slight additional thickening on the date. More specifically, notches appear on the top left of the T and Y in LIBERTY — telltale signs of hub doubling where a second, slightly offset impression created stepped or notched edges on the lettering. The Wexler variety identification is 2014 1c WDDO-001, with no other known cross-references. Die markers provide robust attribution support: the obverse shows a short pre-die crack depression running northwest from the front of the eyebrow — an unusual marker that represents an incipient die failure present before full cracking developed. The reverse carries a strong die scratch running through the top of STA in STATES. As the primary (number 001) DDO listing for 2014, this variety represents the most significant or earliest documented doubled die obverse for the date — a designation that typically draws the most collector attention within a date's DDO catalog. The 2014 Shield Cent was the fifth year of the Union Shield reverse design, and die production for this familiar obverse was well established. Hub doubling on the LIBERTY inscription is one of the most common and most sought-after manifestations on Lincoln Cents, as the bold sans-serif lettering provides clear visual reference points where doubling can be confirmed under moderate magnification. Documented by the Wexler Team, WDDO-001 stands as the flagship DDO variety for 2014 Shield Cent collectors and variety specialists.
