Description

Medium spread north producing an extra triangle bottom and central doorway roof on Monticello defines this fourteenth cataloged VarietyVista doubled die reverse for the 2014 Jefferson Nickel. The northward spread direction creates the distinctive visual of an additional geometric element — the extra triangle at the pediment base — that provides a clear diagnostic reference for attribution. VarietyVista assigned die tracking codes that remain in the provisional stage (UVC-????, DMR-0??), with three die states identified: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid-Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (also unconfirmed). The pending UVC and DMR codes indicate this variety was documented relatively recently and has not yet accumulated the specimen base needed for full die stage characterization. The Monticello reverse's pediment area — where Thomas Jefferson's architectural design features a classical triangular pediment above the portico columns — is the focal point for identifying this variety.
