2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-034

Description

Attributed by Ken Cleveland and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-034, this doubled die reverse on a 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling is among the rarest mechanisms in die variety classification, resulting from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process rather than the lateral or rotational shifts seen in more common classes. Reverse die markers include a die gouge below the R of PLURIBUS and another die gouge above the first O of MONTICELLO, while no obverse markers were noted. The Jefferson Nickel's Monticello reverse, restored in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey series, features Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate with its distinctive architectural details — the columned portico, the dome, and the multi-paned windows and doors that provide particularly rich terrain for doubled die variety hunters. Thirty-four documented doubled die reverses for the 2014-P date reflects the continued productivity of modern die variety research on the Return to Monticello design, where fine architectural elements amplify even subtle hub misalignment into attributable varieties.
