2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-030

Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee, this 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling. Class VIII doubling shows below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. That thirty doubled die reverses have been cataloged for the 2014-P Jefferson Nickel alone underscores how productive this issue was for die variety collectors. Tilted hub doubling results from angular misalignment during die production, creating displacement that varies in both magnitude and direction across the design. The Monticello reverse's structured architecture makes such angular shifts measurable against the building's horizontal and vertical lines. Die markers on this variety include a die gouge above the upper left side of the M in UNUM, a small die gouge above the I of MONTICELLO on the reverse — where the gouge's proximity to the letter I creates a distinctive appearance — and a die gouge above the long right window.
