2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-029
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting the relatively uncommon Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling, this 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDR-029 shows its doubled die effect as a horizontal bar appearing below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub is canted at a slight angle during one of the die-sinking impressions, producing localized displacement that concentrates in specific design zones rather than spreading uniformly across the die face. Obverse die markers include a die gouge dot in the field at the lower right of Jefferson's right eye. The reverse carries a die gouge dot at the lower left of the V in FIVE and a die gouge inside the upper portion of the S in PLURIBUS. Attributed by Brian Sims, WDDR-029 is notable for how the tilted hub mechanism created a discrete horizontal bar element within Monticello's architectural details, producing a recognizable geometric feature rather than the typical spread or thickness doubling associated with more common hub doubling classes.
