Description

Attributed by K. Joe Rottmann and carrying Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-027, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the reverse. The doubled impression appears below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, a location where the tilted hub displacement creates a visible secondary outline of the architectural detail. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub contacting the die at a slight angle during the sinking process, producing spread that varies in direction and intensity across the die face depending on distance from the tilt axis. Die markers for this variety are concentrated on the reverse: die scratches appear to the right of the dome and inside the large semicircular window of Monticello, while no notable obverse die markers have been recorded. The absence of obverse diagnostics places full attribution weight on the reverse details — the doubling position below the upper left door frame and the accompanying scratches near the dome. Monticello's intricate architectural elements make the center doorway area a productive zone for detecting tilted hub varieties on Jefferson Nickels.
