2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-024
ErrorDescription
Classified as Class VIII tilted hub doubling, this twenty-fourth documented doubled die reverse for the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing a rotational displacement that differs from the more common lateral or vertical shifts of other classes. Jason Huffman attributed this variety, and it is cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2014-P WDDR-024. The obverse carries no notable die markers, while the reverse displays a die gouge above the R of AMERICA and a die gouge in the upper right corner of the long right window — both serving as diagnostic confirmation points for authentication. Twenty-four doubled die reverses documented for a single date and mint reflects the extraordinary depth of modern variety research on Jefferson Nickels. The 2014-P was struck using Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse, which had been in nearly continuous production since 1938. The architectural details of Jefferson's estate — its doors, windows, columns, and steps — provide numerous fine design elements where tilted hub displacement becomes detectable under careful examination.
