Description

Jeff Stanley identified Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on WDDR-022, the twenty-second cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2014 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel. The tilted hub produced doubling in three distinct zones on Monticello's facade: below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps, below the left side of the triangle above the center door, and between the left column and the upper left side of the door frame — a multi-zone footprint that documents how tilted hub displacement propagates across adjacent architectural elements. Neither obverse nor reverse die markers were noted, placing the entire attribution burden on the doubling characteristics themselves. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-022, this variety demonstrates that Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the Monticello design produces diagnostically distinct varieties even when affecting the same general zone of the building — each WDDR number exhibiting slightly different displacement angles, magnitudes, or affected structural elements. The three-zone spread across the door frame, pediment triangle, and column-to-frame junction maps the tilted hub's angular displacement vector: the doubling's presence at three vertically and horizontally separated points triangulates the hub's tilt axis, information that die manufacturing engineers could use to diagnose the mechanical causes of recurrent Class VIII events. Philadelphia's 2014 nickel output contributed twenty-two documented DDR varieties to the Return to Monticello catalog, confirming this design era's variety productivity.
