Description

Attributed by Jessy Gozum and assigned Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-020, this twentieth doubled die reverse for the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from an angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing a rotational spread pattern distinct from the lateral shifts of more common doubling classes. Reverse die markers include a die chip inside the second O of MONTICELLO and a die dot to the left of the large semicircular window — features that confirm this specific die pair beyond the primary doubling diagnostic. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Twenty documented WDDRs for the 2014-P date demonstrates the remarkable concentration of tilted hub doubling on the Monticello reverse, where the architectural details of Jefferson's Virginia home provide numerous fine reference points for detecting angular displacement. The Return to Monticello reverse, restored in 2006 after the Westward Journey interlude, has proven exceptionally productive for doubled die research because its geometric precision amplifies even slight hub misalignment.
