Description

Attributed by Michael Rusk, this Class VIII doubled die reverse on the 2014 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel exhibits tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling is produced by a tilted hub during die manufacture, creating a directional displacement that manifests differently across various areas of the design depending on their distance and angle from the tilt axis. The affected area — the main entrance doorway of Jefferson's Monticello — sits at a central focal point of the reverse design, where the architectural detail of the door frame provides fine lines susceptible to showing even modest hub displacement. A light die scratch extending from the lower portion of the S in PLURIBUS serves as the reverse die marker, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse has been the standard Jefferson Nickel reverse design since the series began in 1938, and decades of production have generated hundreds of cataloged die varieties across the building's intricate architectural features — columns, windows, steps, and door frames each offering distinct areas where doubling can manifest.
