Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler himself — the founder of the Wexler die variety attribution system — this tenth doubled die reverse for the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel carries special provenance among variety researchers. Designated Wexler Variety ID 2014-P WDDR-010, it exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from angular tilt between the hub and die during hubbing, creating a rotational displacement distinct from lateral shifts. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge (dot) below the U of TRUST, while the reverse shows a small die gouge between the lower portions of N and T of CENTS — providing two independent attribution points beyond the primary doubling. The 2014-P Jefferson Nickel continues the Return to Monticello reverse design in use since 2006, and the Monticello doorframe area has proven to be among the most productive zones for detecting Class VIII tilted hub doubling on this design. Ten documented WDDRs for the 2014-P date demonstrates the consistent productivity of this reverse design for doubled die research. Wexler's personal attribution of this variety reflects his continued active involvement in die variety cataloging, a field he has shaped more than any other living researcher.
