2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler personally as 2014-P WDDR-008, this Jefferson Nickel from the Return to Monticello series (2006 to date) exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling — a mechanism where the working hub was angled slightly relative to the working die during the secondary impression, creating doubling that varies in magnitude across the die face. The doubled image appears below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the top of numeral 4 of the date, while the reverse carries multiple diagnostic features: a small die gouge to the right of the center of E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, a small die gouge (dot) to the left of the top of C in MONTICELLO, a die scratch connecting the top of D in UNITED to the first S in STATES, and a die scratch connecting the upper portions of the second T and E of STATES. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2014-P WDDR-008. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition — 75% copper and 25% nickel — weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The Return to Monticello reverse, reintroduced in 2006 with Jamie Franki's updated rendering after the Westward Journey series, restored the Monticello building to the coin's reverse. The multiple die gouges and scratches documented across both dies provide a robust set of attribution points that allow confident identification even on worn specimens where the tilted hub doubling itself may be difficult to discern.
