2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Stephen Young, WDDR-006 on the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper right portion and to the right of the left side of the door frame on the center door above the Monticello steps. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the working hub strikes the die at a slight angle, producing displacement that radiates from a pivot point — design elements closest to the tilt axis remain sharp while those farther away develop progressively stronger doubling. On the Monticello reverse, the architectural details of the doorways, columns, and pediment provide excellent reference lines for detecting this type of distortion. Reverse die markers include a die chip below the center portion of the S of PLURIBUS, a small die gouge above the M of UNUM, and a small die gouge inside the upper left portion of the N of UNITED. No obverse die markers have been noted. The combination of a specific doorframe doubling location and three reverse die markers gives this variety a clear diagnostic profile.
