2014 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 2014 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005 on the Jefferson Nickel displays medium spread to the south manifesting as an extra left triangle bottom and a doubled central doorway roof on the Monticello building. The modern Jefferson Nickel, part of the Return to Monticello series introduced in 2006 with Jamie Franki's updated obverse portrait and the restored Felix Schlag Monticello reverse, is struck in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. Die markers from VarietyVista are UVC-1825 and DMR-006, with three documented die states: Stage A at Early Die State shows two small die gouge dots above and between the NT of CENTS with the obverse also at EDS, Stage B at Mid Die State is unconfirmed, and Stage C at Late Die State is also unconfirmed. The southward spread affecting the architectural triangle and doorway roof of Monticello is particularly notable because the building's geometric details — triangular pediment, columned portico, and doorway elements — provide sharp reference lines against which doubling displacement becomes clearly visible. The two die gouge dots above NT of CENTS at EDS serve as the primary attribution markers for confirming the specific die pair early in its production run before additional die deterioration may obscure finer diagnostics.
