2013P-10DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Robert Adams III, this 2013 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime displays very strong trail die features on the reverse, with prominent trails extending from the flame tips of the torch and lighter trails from the olive leaves and the bottom of the letters ES in STATES. Trail dies form during the die manufacturing process when residual metal flow lines created during hubbing are not fully removed by post-hubbing polishing, leaving raised linear features that appear on every coin struck from that die. A deep die scratch or gouge runs through the upper portion of the letters ATES on the reverse, providing a secondary diagnostic marker, and the obverse die is slightly misaligned relative to the reverse. The "very strong" trails from the flame tips are particularly notable — the torch on John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime reverse features multiple pointed flame tips that create natural starting points for trail lines, as the metal displaced during hubbing flows outward from these pointed design elements. The 2013P-10DER-001T designation identifies this as the first documented trail die reverse for the 2013 Philadelphia Mint dime in the Trail Dies catalog, with the T suffix indicating the trail die classification.
