2013P-1DEO-008T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Cataloged by the Trail Dies research group as 2013P-1DEO-008T, this Lincoln Shield Cent variety documents a trail die impression on the obverse of a 2013 Philadelphia Mint issue. The catalog number's "1DEO" segment denotes the one-cent denomination and obverse location, while "008T" places it as the eighth trail die obverse variety recorded for this date. Trail die impressions form through a specific sequence of events at the coining press: after a coin is struck, it should be ejected cleanly from between the dies, but occasionally it lingers in the collar just long enough for the next planchet to be positioned on top of it. When the dies close on this stacked arrangement, the raised design of the trapped coin presses into the underside of the new planchet, leaving a shallow, slightly offset secondary image. Both the obverse and reverse of this variety are documented at mid-die state with no supplementary die markers noted. Found by Joe Koelling, this entry contributes to the systematic documentation of trail die occurrences across the modern Lincoln Cent series.
