2013P-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Joe Koelling and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 2013P-1DEO-001T is a trail die obverse variety found on the Philadelphia-minted Lincoln Shield Cent. Trail dies occur when a die makes partial or incomplete contact during the striking process, leaving a ghost-like secondary impression displaced from the primary design. The Lincoln Shield Cent, featuring Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010, is struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter with Victor David Brenner's iconic Lincoln portrait on the obverse. Die markers for this variety place it at Stage B, with the obverse at Mid Die State showing a die crack in Lincoln's forehead. On the reverse, also at MDS, a die crack with an associated die chip appears on the upper left edge of the shield design. These die crack markers on both sides serve as the primary authentication diagnostics for confirming the specific die pair. The forehead crack on Lincoln portraits is a frequently observed die marker across many Lincoln Cent varieties, but the combination with the upper left shield crack and die chip narrows identification to this particular trail die pairing.
