Description

Identified through Wexler Team research, this 2013 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent WDDO-013 presents one of the more visually accessible doubled die obverses in the Shield series, with strong extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date, light extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, and notching visible on the upper left portions of ERTY in LIBERTY. The graduated intensity — strong on some elements, light on others, with notching in specific letter areas — indicates the hub displacement varied across the die face, affecting design elements differently based on their distance and orientation relative to the pivot point. A small die gouge near the rim to the left of the R in TRUST serves as the obverse die marker, while the reverse displays a die crack running along the left side of the top of the shield, north of E PLU in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2013 1¢ WDDO-013, this variety benefits from the Shield reverse design introduced in 2010, which replaced the Memorial reverse after fifty-one years and launched a new era of Lincoln cent die variety research.
