2013 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2013 1-cent WDDO-011 and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 2013P-1DO-008, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 2013 Lincoln Shield cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Lincoln Shield cent, introduced in 2010, is produced in copper-plated zinc composition weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. The primary doubling diagnostic on WDDO-011 presents as strong extra thickness on the date numerals, making the date area the best location for initial variety identification. Additionally, notches are visible on the lower left of the 2 and the 1 in the date, where the doubled hub impression created distinct separation points on these digits. The lower left letters of ERTY in LIBERTY also display notching, extending the doubling pattern into the motto area of the obverse design. No significant obverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been noted. The reverse die carries a die crack running along the top of the left side of the shield, along with a large die chip north of the LU in PLURIBUS. These reverse die markers are particularly useful for attribution since they provide confirmation of the correct die pairing independent of the obverse doubling characteristics. The Coppercoins cross-reference designation of 2013P-1DO-008 indicates this variety is independently documented in that catalog system, providing additional confirmation of its legitimacy as a distinct die variety. Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse design, adopted in 2010, features the shield's horizontal stripes and vertical bands along with the ONE CENT and E PLURIBUS UNUM inscriptions where die cracks and chips frequently develop during extended production runs at Philadelphia.
