Description
VarietyVista's VDDR-004 for the 2013 Jefferson Nickel shows medium southward spread that creates an extra window base below the triangle and an additional line beneath the central doorway roof of the Monticello facade. Cataloged with UVC-1819 and DMR-004, the variety progresses through three die states. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B reaches mid-die state, identified by a depression off the left building edge, with the obverse also at MDS. Stage C is unconfirmed late die state. The Monticello building, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation home, has served as the Jefferson Nickel's reverse motif since Felix Schlag's original 1938 design, and its architectural details — windows, doorways, columns, and pediment — provide a rich landscape for doubled die study. The southward spread creating phantom architectural elements like the extra window base and doorway roof line makes this variety particularly engaging, as the doubling mimics additional structural features within the building itself.
