Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1819 and die marker record DMR-004, DDR-003 on the 2013 Jefferson Nickel exhibits a medium spread directed North, manifesting as an extra left window base extending to the triangle above the central doorway on the Monticello reverse. This northward displacement created a ghost image of the architectural detail above its intended position, producing a diagnostic doubling that is most easily confirmed by examining the small triangular pediment above the main entrance. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A represents the early die state (unconfirmed at present), Stage B documents the reverse and obverse at early-to-mid die state (EMDS), and Stage C represents the late die state (also unconfirmed). The progression from EDS through EMDS to LDS traces the working die's entire service life, with the doubling remaining constant across all stages while die wear markers evolve — flow lines accumulate, die cracks may develop, and fine detail gradually softens. Within the Return to Monticello series (2006 to date), architectural doubling on the Monticello facade is among the most collected DDR subcategories because the building's geometric lines — windows, columns, steps, and doorframes — provide sharp reference edges that make even modest hub displacement visually striking. The medium spread intensity places DDR-003 in a desirable middle ground: strong enough for confident naked-eye or low-power attribution, yet not so dramatic as to command the premium prices associated with the strongest known spreads.
